Sales ... always my kryptonite. It's strange ... I am articulate, curious, and though at my core am an introvert, I am comfortable in most social situation. But sales? Terrible. I think it may be a counterreaction thing ... I am very aware when people are trying to sell me something. Sometimes I feel like someone is pissing down my leg and telling me it's raining. Or maybe I'm just very deliberate when making decisions. I wish I'd been better at it ... it would have helped me immensely during my career.

I am sure that you are better at "sales" than you think you are. You have had a successful career, and life. You must have persuaded people to do and see your side of the thing along the way.

There is sales, then there is sales. Some sales are used car and snake oil salespeople. The other sales is people trying to actually help folks with a thing that may make their life better. I hope I'm the latter. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'm sure I used what you might consider "sales" principles as a teacher ... i.e. know my topic, enthusiasm and passion for my "product" (literature). People skills and sales skills are interchangable in some ways.

Spot on. I'm going to share your post with my 22 year son who is a new field sales rep in NYC. It verifies many of "Dad's" suggestions.

Hope your son does well with the info. It worked for me! Thanks for commenting, Mark.

He read it and confirmed that it all sounded familiar. Mission accomplished! Now it's up to him to apply these tactics.
