More SEO Tricks to Help your SubStack in 2022

pau1.substack.com

I ran across this idea on a web forum. I thought it would make sense to share it with my fellow StackHacks Marketing people:

โ€œSo, there's a little trick I've been doing that more people should know about. It's a clever workaround that lets you keep using Substackย andย your domain.

  • Each time you post a newsletter on Substack, copy & paste it over to a blog post on your website.

  • A week after publishing to Substack, erase the post, leaving a big fat link to your website. Say something like, "This issue has been archived and is available atย yourpersonalname.com. Read now -->"

Now, every "web" visitor to your Substack will end up on your website, helping you gain traffic, trust, and rankings with Google.

It also means there is no risk of content cannibalization/duplication since there is only one "live" version of your content at any given time.

I've been doing this for 3 months, and it's working like a charm.โ€

Why do this?

So you canโ€™t be Deplatformed.

From an SEO point of view, there are a few reasons:

  • โŒ You have control over all aspects of SEO (Search Engine Optimization) on your website.

  • โŒ With a SubStack site, you canโ€™t make it faster. Site speed is one of the main criteria Google looks at for ranking order.

  • โŒ You canโ€™t inject code (like Google Analytics Tracking ID) (robots.txt file) (sitemaps) or add meta tags for your description:

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN">    <html>
  <head>
    <title>Blogger's Word Counter</title>
  <meta charset="UTF-8">
  <meta name="description" content="Free Word Counter for your newsletter">
  <meta name="keywords" content="Substack, Revue, Medium, Blogger word counter">
  <meta name="author" content="Paul Mack">
  <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1.0">

<!-- Global site tag (gtag.js) - Google Analytics -->
<script async src="https://www.googletagmanager.com/gtag/js?id=G-WXXXXXXX"></script> <script> window.dataLayer = window.dataLayer || []; function gtag(){dataLayer.push(arguments);} gtag('js', new Date()); gtag('config', 'G-WXXXXXX');
</script>

โœ” SubStack does a good job with the mobile version of your site. It is fairly fast. And mobile-friendliness is a major SEO ranking criterion.

โœ” All the SubStack articles use SSL Security (the little lock icon beside htpps - where โ€˜sโ€™ stands for a secure site.

โœ” It would be hard for someone to hack into your SubStack website, and easier for a hacker to get into your website. (Unless your last name is Snowden).

โœ” You can implement some on-page SEO techniques that will help Google find and rank your site:
