As usual, very helpful, Paul! Here's where I wish I had someone to do this kinda stuff, so I can be left alone to, you know, do the writing! I love your detailed instructions...that's not the problem...it's the time! As I've always said, I just need to hire a tech-savvy 8-year-old (like there's any that AREN'T) to handle "all that kinda stuff"! My buttons are blue, a color not included, apparently, in the study!π₯Oh well, I'd better get used to red! Thanks again....I'll get to it!
LOL, You know what they say about blue buttons, eh? I've not heard anyone say anything about blue buttons, so I don't know. Obvs, people click any color buttons if they feel the value of the offer is worth the click. The squeeze is worth the juice. (sorry)
Hi Paul. Love the update on Buttons. My Mom never would have understood. Crazily, she thought buttons were just for sewing. Go figure.
You mention using an Incognito button to view your site. I tried, instead, going to my Settings and clicking on the 'welcome letter' - essentially what visitors see before they sign up. I clicked on the Submit button there and got a URL, which worked when changing the wording on the Submit button.
My weekly is going out in a couple of hours, so I'm going to wait and play around with this on my next draft.
Question: Do you need to create the wonderfully creative new Custom button every time you want to include a sign up button in a newsletter? Any way to save it for future use?
And Brad Kyle....my button is purple....no studies on that either. Maybe I'll try orange....who knows.
Thanks for your comment! I just save the subscribe URL in a note and copy/paste every time I feel inclined to have a custom saying. It would be easier if we could just save it to a "personal favorites" right?
Or if we had the option to create custom buttons in our settings.
Plus, I like to say something before the button about why they should subscribe. There's no option to center that text. The Subscribe with caption would be perfect, if we could customize that button.
Thanks so much for the updated post. Great reminder!
Excellent insights. As a writer of CTA's, I ususally just focus on the words. This is a timely reminder to focus on the colors and UX elements as well. It will be interesting to do some split testing on this to see how well each set of wording, color, and surrounding text drives subs. Thanks for providing inspiration for my next experiment!
I very much like these little tweaks that allow us to refine the details of Substack - anything that allows for experimentation and data gets a thumbs-up from me!
Unlike everything else you consume on the internet, my content is not free. Because I work for you! And the way you pay me back is by subscribing for free (below). This is a gentlemenβs agreement since Iβm not able to look over your shoulder while you do this. But I trust you.

Iβve thought the same thing many times and may hire the 12 year old neighbour!
You'd get no better tech advisor, and they work for peanuts......pretty literally!π₯π
Thank you so much Paul, this is great.

Nice! What is your button going to say?
