Don’t worry about criticism of your punctuation. You were obviously β€˜doing it like a Brit’.

We teach British English learners almost the opposite of what you said – i.e.

β€˜Single quotation marks are used to enclose direct quotations and titles of works like books, plays, movies, songs, lectures, and TV shows. They can also indicate irony or introduce a new term or nickname. Double quotation marks are used for quotes within quotes.

β€˜When a comma or full stop is needed after a quotation, the final full stop or comma goes outside the quotation marks’.

I say β€˜almost’ the opposite because the print publishing world tends to use a hybrid, anyway.

Long story….

β€˜You can’t please all of the people all of the time’.

Now who said that?

..."you can please all of the people some of the time, but you can't please all of the people all of the time”. ~ John Lydgate (I have no idea who he was, but I do like the quote:)

'Half of the people can be part right all of the time,

Some of the people can be all right part of the time,

But all of the people can't be all right all of the time.

I think Abraham Lincoln said that.

"I'll let you be in my dreams if I can be in yours."

I said that'.

– Bob Dylan

I am always interested in posts about the seed vault in Norway. It was alarming in 2019, I think it was, that the ice and snow around the building had started to melt enough that they feared water would leak in and contaminate the seeds! I guess it's been fixed by now - https://www.croptrust.org/work/svalbard-global-seed-vault/

"As of May 2024, the Seed Vault holds more than 1.3 million seed varieties originating from almost every country in the world. These range from unique varieties of major African and Asian food staples such as maize, rice, wheat, cowpea and sorghum to European and South American varieties of eggplant, lettuce, barley and potato. The Seed Vault already holds the most diverse collection of food crop seeds in the world...." - pretty amazing!

Paul-you’ve done it again. Your newsletter is one I read to the very end. It’s an entertaining list that always makes me go β€˜hmmm.’ And then smile. My favorite? All of them. But I’ll tell you that I scrolled through every state for their favorite Costco item. Prosecco and toilet paper seem to win. And then there is the value of the Cowboys franchise. I live close to Dallas so we have a love/hate relationship with them.
