I was going to use the term Sanctions against Russia, but that word has two opposite meanings at the same time, so we will use the words Economic Boycotts against Russia instead.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022. North American and Western European leaders decided to counter Putin’s aggression by hitting him where it hurts the most. Their financial system.

Imagine going to the store and giving your Mastercard to buy groceries only to be told that the credit card system has withdrawn its services in your country.

Local banks in Russia are still open and using Russia based Credit cards, and local currency.

Since the invasion of Ukraine began, over 400 companies have announced their withdrawal from Russia—but some companies have continued to operate in Russia undeterred. 

Originally conceptualized as a simple "withdraw" vs. "remain" list, our new list of companies now consists of five categories: 

1) WITHDRAWAL - Clean Break: companies completely halting Russian engagements/exiting Russia; 

2) SUSPENSION - Keeping Options Open for Return: companies temporarily curtailing operations while keeping return options open; 

3) SCALING BACK - Reducing Activities: companies scaling back some business operations while continuing others;

4) BUYING TIME - Holding Off New Investments/Developments: companies postponing future planned investment/development/marketing while continuing substantive business; 

5) DIGGING IN - Defying Demands for Exit: companies defying demands for exit/reduction of activities

In 1990 I was in the queue when McDonald's opened its 1st restaurant in Moscow: when iron curtains were crumbling & Russia was embracing the West. Today McDonald's announced it is temporarily closing its 850 restaurants in Russia. Hugely symbolic.

Members of the public are paying for Airbnb rentals in Ukraine to help get money to residents who are facing extreme financial hardship because of the Russian invasion.

The home rental platform has already moved to offer free housing to 100,000 Ukrainian refugees, but members of the public have come up with a novel way to financially help those who either intend to remain or are trapped in the country owing to the conflict.

One couple who made a booking for 3-10 March in Kyiv, posted confirmation on Twitter and wrote: “Hello Maria, my wife and I have just booked your apartment for one week, but of course, we will not be visiting. This is just so you can receive some money.” (…source)
